Final Grade Calculator
Easily determine what score you need on your final exam.
Optimized for printing/exporting as a single-page PDF.
The Final Grade Calculator answers the question every student asks as exam season approaches — what score do I actually need on my final to finish the course where I want? It sounds simple, but the answer depends on three variables that interact in ways that are not always obvious: your current grade, the grade you are aiming for, and how much weight the final exam carries in the overall course calculation. Get any one of those numbers wrong and your study strategy could be built around a target that is either unnecessarily high or not actually enough to reach your goal. Enter all three, click calculate, and the required final exam score is right there — no formula to recall, no arithmetic to check twice, just a clear number to work toward.
Formulas Used: Required Final Exam Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight Final Course Grade = (Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) + (Final Exam Score × Final Weight)
How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
Three numbers are all it takes to get your answer:
Enter Your Current Grade as a percentage — the grade you are sitting at right now before the final exam. This should reflect all the coursework, assignments, quizzes, and midterms that have already been graded and counted toward your final mark. If your current grade is 78%, type 78.
Enter the Grade You Want to finish the course with as a percentage. This is your target — the number you need your final course grade to reach or exceed. If you need an 85% to maintain a scholarship or secure a particular GPA, enter 85.
Enter the Final Exam Weight as a percentage — how much the final exam counts toward your overall course grade. If the syllabus states the final is worth 40% of your grade, enter 40. This is the figure that determines how much leverage the exam actually has over your final result.
Click Calculate and the required final exam score appears immediately. The calculator also tells you if the target you entered is already secured based on your current grade — meaning you could score zero on the final and still finish above your target — or flags if the target is mathematically unachievable regardless of what you score on the exam, saving you from studying toward an impossible number.
Export to PDF using your browser’s print function if you want a clean, saved copy of the result to reference during your exam preparation.
Why Use the Final Grade Calculator Online?
Tells You Exactly What to Aim For: Vague targets like “I need to do well on the final” are not a study strategy. A specific number — say, 74% — gives you something concrete to plan around. Knowing whether you need a distinction-level performance or just need to pass the exam changes how you allocate your preparation time across multiple subjects.
Flags Unachievable and Already-Secured Targets Immediately: Two outcomes make further calculation pointless — when your target is already locked in regardless of your final exam score, and when no possible exam score could get you there. The calculator identifies both situations and communicates them clearly, so you are never studying toward a target that cannot affect your result or one that was never within reach.
Accounts for the Real Weight of the Final Exam: A final worth 20% of your grade and one worth 60% have dramatically different consequences for your course outcome — and they require dramatically different exam scores to reach the same course grade. By including exam weight as an explicit input, the calculator reflects the actual structure of your course rather than treating all finals as equal.
Works for Any Course or Grading Structure: Whether your final is worth 25%, 40%, or 50% of the course, and whether your current grade is a comfortable 90% or a precarious 60%, the formula adjusts to your specific situation. There are no assumptions built in beyond what you provide.
Free, Instant, and Requires Nothing Extra: Three fields, one click, and your required final exam score is ready — no account, no sign-up, and no cost. Simple, focused, and exactly as fast as a tool like this should be.
