    Help & Information

    Timecode Formats

The calculator supports two common timecode formats:

    • HH:MM:SS:FF - Hours:Minutes:Seconds:Frames (e.g., 01:23:45:12)
    • HH:MM:SS.MS - Hours:Minutes:Seconds.Milliseconds (e.g., 01:23:45.500)

    Calculator Functions

    • Add - Adds two timecodes together
    • Subtract - Subtracts the second timecode from the first
    • Duration - Calculates the time difference between two timecodes
    • Convert - Translates between timecode formats, frames, and seconds
    • Offset - Applies a positive or negative offset to a timecode
    • FPS Conversion - Converts timecodes between different frame rates

    Tips

    • Use the framerate buttons to set the current working framerate
    • When entering timecode, you can use period (.) or comma (,) for milliseconds
    • For frames to timecode conversion, simply enter the frame number
    • For seconds to timecode, enter the number of seconds (can include decimals)
    • History is saved in your browser between sessions

Anyone who has spent time in a video editing timeline knows that working with timecodes manually is one of those tasks that looks simple until it is not. Adding two timecodes together, converting between frames and seconds, or translating a timecode from 24fps to 29.97fps without introducing a single frame of error requires precision that mental math simply cannot guarantee. The Timecode Calculator handles all of it — basic arithmetic between timecodes, format conversions, offset adjustments, and framerate translations — in one professional tool built specifically for editors, producers, and anyone working in post-production.

How to Use the Timecode Calculator

The calculator is organized into several sections, each handling a different aspect of timecode work:

Set Your Framerate: Start by selecting the framerate your project is working in — 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, or 60 fps. If your project uses a non-standard rate, you can enter a custom FPS value directly. Setting this first ensures every calculation in the session uses the correct frame count per second.

Select Timecode Format: Choose between HH:MM:SS:FF (hours, minutes, seconds, frames) for frame-accurate work or HH:MM:SS.MS (hours, minutes, seconds, milliseconds) for millisecond-based timelines. Both formats are fully supported throughout the calculator.

Basic Calculations: Enter two timecodes into the input fields — for example 01:23:45:12 and 00:45:30:08 — then select whether you want to Add them together, Subtract the second from the first, or calculate the Duration between the two points. Click Calculate and your result appears immediately in the correct timecode format for your selected framerate.

Conversion Tools: Use the conversion section to move between different representations of time. You can convert a timecode to its total frame count, convert a frame number back into a timecode, translate a timecode into seconds, or convert a number of seconds into a timecode. Select the conversion type, enter your value, and click Convert.

Timecode Offset: Enter a source timecode and an offset value, choose whether to add or subtract the offset, and click Apply Offset. This is useful when syncing footage that starts at a non-zero timecode or when adjusting for camera-specific offset values in multi-camera edits.

Framerate Conversion: Enter a timecode, select the source FPS and the target FPS, and click Convert FPS to see the equivalent timecode in the new framerate. This is particularly valuable when working across deliverables that require different frame rates — a cinema cut at 24fps and a broadcast version at 25fps, for example.

View Calculation History: The calculator saves up to 50 past calculations locally in your browser so you can scroll back through your session, copy a previous result, or clear the history entirely when you are done.

Why Use the Timecode Calculator Online?

Eliminates Manual Timecode Math: Adding timecodes is not the same as adding regular numbers — frames roll over at different points depending on your framerate, and a single miscalculation can throw an entire edit out of sync. This calculator handles the rollover logic automatically so your results are always frame-accurate.

Covers Every Common Workflow Need: From simple addition to framerate conversion to offset application, the range of functions here covers the vast majority of timecode tasks that come up in real post-production work. Having all of them in one place is faster than switching between tools or writing custom formulas.

Supports All Standard Framerates: 24fps for cinema, 25fps for PAL broadcast, 29.97fps for NTSC, 30fps, 50fps, and 60fps for high frame rate content — plus custom rates for anything outside the standard set. Whatever format your footage arrived in, the calculator works with it.

Persistent Session History: The history log means you do not lose your earlier calculations when you move on to the next one. If you need to reference a duration you calculated ten steps ago, it is still there waiting in the history panel.

Built for Professionals, Free for Everyone: The depth of functionality here — dual formats, custom framerates, offset tools, FPS conversion — reflects the real demands of professional editing work. And yet it requires no subscription, no account, and no software installation. Open it in any browser and it is ready to use immediately.
